This imposing dune is located on the edge of the Landes de Gascogne forest, the largest man-made forest in Western Europe. The Dune du Pilat occupies a large part of the famous Côte d’Argent, at the entrance to the Bay of Arcachon, and is between 100 and 110 m high (103.6 m, highest point measured in 2023). The dune’s dimensions are impressive: 2.9 km long and 616 m wide. It is measured regularly, as it is always in motion.
The constant movement of the Dune du Pilat is of particular interest to scientists, as it is the only one in the whole country to be constantly on the move . The eastern part of the Dune, which plunges into the Landes de Gascogne forest, buries the trees, advancing by 1 to 5 meters per year. This movement occurs under the influence of winds and tides. On its seaward side, sand movements constantly modify the coast’s features. The inclination of the slopes also varies according to its position in relation to the wind. The dune’s shape is asymmetrical.
