The Arcachon Basin in winter

Parcourir le Basin d'Arcachon en hiver

Winter in the Bay of Arcachon is a cold, gray season. The average temperature in December and January is around 6°C. So remember to pack warm clothes when visiting the Bay of Arcachon, but don’t let the cool temperatures put you off. The winter season on the Bassin d’Arcachon is often associated with beautiful sunny days when you can enjoy this magnificent landscape. If you’re not afraid of the cold, or if you’re a fan of cold-water baths, remember that in winter the water temperature is around 7°C. In winter, the Bassin d’Arcachon is also a good time to observe marine life, with the appearance of seals, dolphins and birds such as red-footed boobies and cormorants.

Dune skiing

The Bassin d’Arcachon dune is famous for its gentle, sandy environment and gently sloping peaks. It’s a landscape that evokes feelings of calm and peace, and it’s even more impressive in winter, when it transforms into a giant ski slope. The Dune du Pyla, one of the largest dunes in Europe, is around 7 km long and has a maximum height of 55 meters. In winter, you can take a leisurely stroll, or try your hand at windsurfing or kitesurfing. And if you’re feeling brave, you can even try sandboarding or snowboarding on one of Europe’s largest sand dunes.

Hiking and walking trails on the GRRN

The Grande Randonnée 30 (GRRN), a long-distance hiking trail in France, passes through the Bassin and links the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea. The trail is also knownas the “Atlantic Coast Trail“, and it’s easy to see why. The trail features long stretches of sandy beaches, high cliffs and lush forests. It’s the perfect place for a long walk and, in winter, you won’t have to share it with crowds of people.

Watching sea lions

Ifseal watching is what you’ve come for, you’re in luck. From November to April, the Arcachon basin is the wintering ground for several species of seal, including the Atlantic seal (also known as the calf seal), and the Mediterranean seal (also known as the monk seal). While the seals are resting, you can visit them and watch them play in their natural habitat. One of the best places to watch seals is the Aquarium du Bassin d’Arcachon. This aquarium is a must-see, as it’s the only place in France where you can watch seals evolve in their natural habitat.
