TOURIST ATTRACTIONS
of Arcachon Bay
The Dune of Pilat
This dune impresses not only by its size (the tallest in all of Europe), but also by its location (on the edge of an equally fascinating forest massif). Listed as an exceptional natural monument, it rises to more than 110 m in height. What is also interesting is that the Pilat dune is always in motion. Indeed, it advances east from 1 m to 5 m per year under the influence of winds and tides. Its measurements therefore vary each year. Succeeding in climbing its slopes is a real feat, with a reward to the key since once on the summit, you will be amazed by the breathtaking view it offers.
Bird Island
Accessible only by boat, this enchanting island seems to have come out of the water. Its dimensions vary under the influence of the tide. Indeed, it can have a circumference between 5 km and 16 km, and is surrounded by oyster beds. This islet is also the meeting place for more than 300 species of birds that come to feed in the waters teeming with small fish and crustaceans. This is where you can discover the famous houses on stilts, the huts tchanquées, essential symbols of the Arcachon Bay and the island of birds.
The Teich ornithological reserve
This protected natural park is a popular place for adventure and exploration in the Arcachon Bay. With an area of 496 ha, it is one of the largest parks in the region. This nature reserve of Prés Salés is home to an impressive concentration of perfectly preserved flora. Alternating mud flats and land areas depending on the tide, the perpetual metamorphosis of this park is sure to fascinate visitors. It is also a place of wintering and reproduction for species of birds of the wetlands, from where the interest to keep it in its original, wild state. A great nature walk to do with the family.
Arguin’s bench
It is one of the most beautiful bird sanctuaries in the Arcachon basin. This huge sandbank is an exceptional place only accessible by boat. Relax for a day on the Arguin Bench in the middle of the crystal clear and calm waters of the Arcachon basin with a good picnic and a splendid view of the Dune du Pilat. After a short walk across the island you will find the ocean where you can immerse yourself in the waves. An essential magical place during your vacation.
