The origins of Andernos-les-Bains

Located on the eastern shore of the Arcachon Basin, the town of Andernos lies between Arès and Lanton. Anderitia, Andere means “lady” in Basque. After being called simply Andernos, in 1897 the town succeeded in adding the additional determinant -les-Bains. In Gascon, the commune’s name is Andernòs / Endarnòs.

Where to walk in Andernos-les-Bains?

In Andernos-les-Bains, you can choose between Plage des Quinconces, Plage du Port Ostreicole, Plage du Bétey and Plage de la Jetée. The covered market is currently closed, but a temporary structure has been set up in place Camille Goubet all year round. You’ll find a wide range of products and traders from different horizons, depending on the season. The winter season is a big hit with visitors. As well as strolling along the beach in the fresh air, you can enjoy Andernos-les-Bains town center and its many leisure activities, stores and restaurants. The prehistoric site of Bétey was home to several villages several millennia ago, now under water. The church of Saint-Eloi was built on the ruins of a Gallo-Roman villa, which you can see right next door. These were listed as historic monuments in 1933. Villa Ignota, better known today as Maison Louis David, after Louis Théodore David, mayor of Andernos from 1920 to 1929, was built in several stages between 1908 and 1914. Its majestic seaside-style architecture was restored to its former glory in 1982, and since then has housed the municipal museum, which displays prehistoric artefacts from Bétey and the Gallo-Roman villa.
