The famous Dune du Pilat
When you think of the Bassin d’Arcachon, you think of the Dune du Pilat in La Teste-de-Buch! This nature reserve is emblematic of the region. In this article, we explain its history and secrets!
The history of Dune du Pilat
The Dune du Pilat was formed around 4,000 years ago, and the various climatic changes it has undergone over the years, with hot and cold climates, have resulted in this famous accumulation of sand. Designated as Europe’s highest dune, it is a great success with visitors, who climb it to admire the view of the Atlantic Ocean. What’s more, it shifts every year, from 1 to 5 m, under the force of the winds and tides of the Atlantic coast. You’re probably wondering how many square meters of sand it contains? No less than 60 million! It measures between 100 and 115m, and is 3km wide.
The Dune du Pilat is made up of 4 levels or, more commonly, paleosols. They are more visible in winter, as you can more easily observe the dark lines separating the different levels of sand. These lines are created by organic matter fossilized by the sand.
Located between the forest and the ocean in the commune of Pyla sur Mer, the Dune du Pilat is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna. In fact, this immense nature reserve is home to a wide range of biodiversity, from birds and migratory birds to lizards and plants.
