Oyster farming villages in Gironde
Visit the oyster huts
In every town and village on the Bassin d’Arcachon, you’ll find the famous “cabanes de pêcheur” (fishermen’s huts ) in the oyster ports, an important part of the region’s heritage. They are maintained with great passion and respect for the maritime environment. These villages are part of the exceptional landscape that makes up the charm of our Arcachon bay.
Most of these huts are dedicated tooyster farming. Some are very pleasant pleasure homes, while the vast majority are sorting sheds.
These wooden cabins have one normative feature in common: they all have the same dimensions (6m x 4m), have no floor, are all aligned and separated from each other by 2 m, and are covered with canal tiles.
Tasting fresh oysters directly in the oyster farmer’s cabin is a tradition. Holidaymakers also like to sit on a terrace overlooking the sea to sample these tasty shellfish, accompanied by caviar, clams, prawns and whelks, which are also in abundance in the region. Of course, tasting is not complete without a glass of white or rose wine… the good life is yours!
The four main areas where oyster farming is most developed are Cap Ferret, Grand Banc, Banc d’Arguin and birds island.
